North Center is located north and a bit to the west of the Loop, and is comprised of the neighborhoods of Roscoe Village, St. Ben’s, and West Lakeview. It is a smaller area and its inhabitants often claim residency in an adjoining district. A few people refer to the area as Roscoe Village instead of North Center. Many families live in this neighborhood. It has plenty of good schools, is economically strong, and is located close to many engaging destinations.
One appeal of North Center is Antique Row. This is a segment of Belmont Avenue that has an comprehensive assortment of antique shops. The tree-lined streets create a green canopy that shades the entire region. The region has a young, contemporary feel which complements its focus on children and families. The Chicago River runs through Roscoe Village and the area has quite a few parks. During the Spring and Summer months, there are many festivals in this part of town.
The region of St. Ben’s takes its name from St. Benedict’s, the local Catholic school and parish. St. Ben’s offers many first-time home buyers the opportunity to settle close to the Loop, usually offering less expensive real estate than that in bordering areas. There are many refined Victorian-style properties in the community together with newer walk-ups. St. Ben’s has good schools and plenty of public transportation.
There is a respectable combination of chain retail stores and smaller, boutique style shops. The region boasts a smart group of restaurants, diners, saloons, and nightclubs. Because of this, the community is attractive to both families and young professionals. Homes in the city come in a variety of styles. Smart shoppers can find frame homes, condos, flats, and newer construction. Houses are priced in the $300,000s. Real estate property in North Center is a bit less expensive than homes in adjacent neighborhoods.
The Brown Line stops at Montrose, Addison, and Irving Park, and CTA busses run through the neighborhood. There is also access to Lake Shore Drive and to the Kennedy Expressway.
