Roseland

Roseland, for a long time one of Chicago’s depressed South Side neighborhoods, is finally beginning to right itself after a fifty-year economic slide. In the last few decades, many of Roseland’s white residents moved out, taking their businesses with them. Since the 1980s, the area’s population has decreased by 12,000 people. But there is some good news, too. Community and city-sponsored revitalization projects have begun to change Roseland. New homes, infrastructure, and aesthetic improvements are reinvigorating the area. Lenders are offering home buyers inducements to move into the district, and new businesses are beginning to test the consumer market.

Bounded by 95th, 115th, Halsted, Harvard, Cottage Grove, and State, Roseland was originally a Dutch farming settlement. It is rumored that the region’s fens contributed to the lush and vibrant rose bushes that grew around the area’s homes, giving Roseland its name.

The average price of a home in Roseland is $100,000, and property can range from $50,000 to over $105,000.
