South Chicago

South Chicago

South Chicago, originally settled by Irish and Swedish traders, was once associated with the lumber and steel industries. The demographic now is chiefly Hispanic and African American. Homes sell for between $30,000 and $180,000, with a good number of rental opportunities at or below $600 per month. The area has some schools. South Chicago is delineated by South Chicago Avenue and the Calumet River, and 79th Street and 95th Street.

The “Rust Belt” syndrome that consumed much of the area likewise took a heavy toll on the once bustling industrial area of South Chicago. Rehabilitation and renovation on many of the turn-of-the-century homes have made this neighborhood reasonably priced and more and more tempting to buyers. These newly modern homes are large and offer quite a few fine advantages.

The Chicago region of South Shore is near both Lake Michigan and the Loop, but still removed enough to keep real estate prices reasonable. People are taking notice and moving to South Shore. Nearly 150 homes were sold in this neighborhood last year, in large part because the average price is around $165,000, with the range extending from $23,000 up beyond $720,000. The boundaries of South Shore are Lake Michigan and Stoney Island, and Marquette and 79th Street.

Marynook, also of the Avalon Park area, has an average home price of $115.
